The Families

All Families within the Kesh are self-sustaining.
Regardless of your Familial background, every member contributes to the vitality and resilience of each City. Whether as a skilled warrior, a masterful blacksmith, an ingenious alchemist or in any other capacity, your role is crucial in ensuring the well-being and prosperity of both your respective Family and the collective community.
Each Family possesses inherent traits and inclinations associated with their respective Family, however, this does not mean that all skills must be aligned with those traits.
For example, you may choose the path of a Tyanite alchemist, a Cainen warrior (Stoneshield), a NaBaalese Ritualist or a Cyrenite blacksmith.
The vibrant clothing that members of each Kesh Family wears not only adds to the visual richness of the Cities, but also serves as a marker of social identity and affiliation.
In the bustling Cities of the Akesh Lands, a kaleidoscope of colours dance throughout the streets in an ever-shifting tapestry of hues. You may choose to become a Tyanite who has sought out work in NaBaalasan, or perhaps a Cainenite who is drawn to the Wharfs of Cyren.

Kimaris
The Family of Kimaris (Ice/Responsibility): Responsibility is often viewed as a burden, a task to endure, but for the Kimarese, it is a privilege and an opportunity. To take responsibility is to recognise the interconnectedness of one’s actions with the world and to step forward with purpose, guiding others through uncertainty. It begins with owning one’s choices, actions, and their consequences.
The people of Kimaris are defined by their unwavering sense of duty and an innate commitment to the well-being of family. From an early age, children are taught that their lives are intertwined with the greater whole, fostering a deep understanding of responsibility and selflessness. While they approach their duties with an almost solemn intensity, this demeanour masks the profound warmth they feel toward others. The Kimarese believe that every act of service, no matter how small, is a vital contribution to the greater good, and they find quiet pride in fulfilling their roles with excellence and integrity. True strength lies in unity, and they view their relationships as the foundation of their resilience, both as individuals and as a community. To be Kimarese is to embrace the belief that no task is too small if it contributes to the greater good of the Akesh.

Tyan
The Family of Tyan (Fire/Conflict): Marked by their passion and determination, Tyanites see conflict and embrace it. Individuals of Tyan thrive in situations of adversity and are natural leaders in times of conflict, channeling their fiery spirit to overcome challenges. Tyanites are resilient in the face of setbacks and failures, bouncing back from defeat with renewed vigor and determination. They are driven by a strong sense of ambition and aspiration, possessing a tenacious spirit and often thriving in competitive environments.
The fiery City of Tyanabad sits in the mountains to the Northeast of the Akesh mainland, carved out and built into the side of a dormant volcano, where flames dance with eternal vigor. The surrounding valley is a broad expanse of grand buildings, surrounded by training yards, amphitheaters and arenas where conflict in all its forms, be that with weapons or words. The city of Tyanabad is bathed in the flow of flickering torches and roaring hearths, casting a radiant warmth that illuminates the streets and alleyways, guiding travelers and residents alike through the labyrinthine pathways.
Hulking above them is the Grand Hall of Tyan, a huge dome-shaped wall that forms the hub of the city. As you step into the Great Hall of Tyan, you are greeted by the rhythmic clang of hammers and anvils and the cracking of roaring fires, the air thick with the scent of molten metal and acrid tang of smoke. Carved from solid stone and adorned with carvings of blacksmiths and artisans at work, these grand chambers serve as a tribute to the city’s craftspeople and a gathering place for its residents. The Great Hall of Tyan is a place of gratitude and respect for Tyan himself; famed for its collection of statues, each depicting a famous Tyanite from history; warrior and craftsperson alike, each with a sealed urn containing their ashes placed at the statue’s feet. At the heart of the Great Hall of Tyan stands a grand altar, adorned with offerings of the finest weapons in all Akesh lands.
At the side of the volcano are some of the largest underground forges in all of Akesh, manned by scores of Tyanite craftspeople; renowned for its accomplished masters and weaponsmiths.
Tempted to play a Tyanite? Here are some questions to inspire you:
Do you prefer to engage in combat, in verbal debates… or perhaps both? How do you embody the fiery spirit and passion of a Tyanite? Do you choose to become a Tyanite warrior (Sun Striker), or perhaps something a little less predictable? Fire can be used for many things; cauterizing wounds may be your passion as a Tyanite surgeon. Or perhaps you thrive in the ritual circle as you demand the power of our Ancestors. Do you join the race to become the Akesh’s most prestigious blacksmith, or do you choose the life of trade, perhaps dealing in various goods, such as the ever popular Fire Water from Tyanabad?

Cainan
The Family of Cainan (Earth/Possession): Grounded and steadfast, Cainanites are renowned for their resourcefulness and practicality, often assuming roles of stewardship and responsibility over essential resources within the cities. Cainenites are also sometimes known for their generosity, reliability and dependability, consistently fulfilling their obligations with diligence and dedication. A humble Family, Cainanites earn the respect and trust of others through their actions rather than in seeking recognition. They are often pragmatic and level-headed, approaching challenges with a practical mindset and a focus on finding viable solutions.
Nestled amidst the rugged landscape of the South East lies the City of Cain, often referred to as the ‘Ten Mile Hill’ - Where the soil is rich with the echoes of generations past. Cainan soil is known for its rich tapestry of nutrients and minerals, nurtured by centuries of careful cultivation and stewardship. A great quality of fertile land comes from the City of Cain, second only to that of the crescent between NaBaalasan and Kadabad. It is forbidden to take the soil above the Halls of Earth.
At the very foot of the Ten Mile Hill stands the heaviest and most defensible gates in all of the Akesh lands. There are colossal twin gate towers either side of the gate, housing the most complex of mechanisms to operate. Behind the first gate stands yet another; often left agape, which has been built into the side of the Ten Mile Hill itself; a monument to the resilience and fortitude of Cainanite people.
Between the two sets of gates lays a ‘semi-circle’ of sorts, the ends of each wall buried into the hill itself - Here, in this space, important business transactions, Kastiqs and public announcements are heralded.
Various settlements have been dug out of the side of the hill on incline, and the only other visible structures above the ground consist of chimneys and access shafts to the various qanats. These settlements in particular are often used for cultivation purposes or precise artistry. The remainder sees the vast and most inspiring gardens that are kept in pristine condition.
The main City of Cain emerges as a marvel of subterranean ingenuity, its sprawling network of chambers and tunnels reminiscent of an ant colony’s intricate labyrinth. The walls are hewn from the solid earth itself, their surfaces adorned with intricate carvings depicting the history and heritage of Cain and its residents. Traders and crafters are strategically placed within this network according to the desired temperature and level of wealth.
Tempted to play a Cainanite? Here are some questions to inspire you:
Does your character utilise their surroundings, such as the gardens and qanats, for cultivation or perhaps artistry? Will you adopt the lifestyle of a Cainan Warrior (Stone Shield), standing steadfast for your brothers and sisters, or will you choose the life of a merchant, trader or collector? Perhaps you enjoy the fruits of alchemy, as you have access to some of the finest ingredients, or perhaps you prefer to explore the Akesh lands beyond the confines of your underground home. Do you choose to participate in the Kastiqs of Cainan? Or do you prefer to tinker in your crafting chambers?

Kade
The Family of Kade (Air/Understanding): Known for empathy and insight, members of the Kade Family possess a deep understanding. Kadians from all walks of life are inquisitive and curious and it serves the Families well. Kadians are well versed in adjusting to changing circumstances and environments with ease. They often rely on their inner sense of knowing to guide their decisions and action.
In the Southwest of the Akesh lands, where the winds whisper secrets and the skies hold untold wisdom, stands the majestic City of Kadabad; its towering spires reaching towards the skies like silent sentinels of knowledge. Unlike other cities, Kadabad’s essence is not bound to the earth or waters, but rather to the boundless expanse of air that surrounds it, imbuing its inhabitants with a deep sense of insight and intuition. Fumes and vapour lightens the mind and echoes of rumour and whispers are carried into the wind.
The ground is often left dry and clear, and wind chimes and ornaments hang in the doorways and windows of all who live there. The people of Kadabad often grow plants in their homes and the absence of birds that reside within the countless roofless havelis is more than just a superstition; they are a symbol of harmony. Birds are seen as guardians of the home and their presence is believed to bring blessings of prosperity and good fortune to those who dwell within.
There are many observation posts and small observatories scattered about Kadabad. Most iconic is the highest permanent astronomical observatory, which allows the observation of astronomical positions with the naked eye; though it is mainly used to measure time and is the most accurate timepiece in all of the Akesh Lands.
At night, when the city is bathed in the soft glow of moonlight, the towers of Kadabad take on an ethereal beauty - their crystalline surfaces shimmering with radiance. It is a time for contemplation and reflection, as the inhabitants of Kadabad look to the skies, often in their observatories, for guidance and inspiration.
Tempted to play a Kadian? Here are some questions to inspire you:
Do you grow plants in your home and have you ever forgotten to tend to the birds of your haveli and paid the price? Have you ever visited the highest stone observatory? Do you choose the life of a trader of knowledge, or perhaps you prefer a more hands-on role? Do you aspire to become a Kadian Warrior (Wind Spear), or perhaps a prestigious archer? Speaking of vapour, what of alchemy? Would you ever step into a ritual circle, or are you more interested in the calmness of meditation?

Cyrenus
The Family of Cyrenus (Water/Command): Endowed with a commanding presence and strategic acumen, Cyrenites exhibit a natural authority and skill in directing resources and guiding others towards common goals. Cyrenites are often decisive and resolute in their decision-making abilities, able to make touch choices quickly and confidently. They are skilled negotiators, able to navigate complex political landscapes and in forging alliances with others. Cyrenites empower those around them, fostering a sense of ownership and accountability amongst their team.
The illustrious City of Cyren is nestled in the embrace of the Akesh lands like a shimmering gem adorning the Northwest coast. As one approaches this elegant city, their gaze is drawn to the grandeur of the Spire of Cyren at the Northernmost tip; piercing the sky as if it is rising from a great wave. Within the Spire are the Great Halls; majestic structures crafted from the finest marble columns, standing sentinel over the azure waters of its namesake bay. Indeed, Cyren is aptly dubbed the “Jewel of Akesh” by its proud denizens.
The Great Halls of Cyren are a sight to behold, pillars rising in graceful arks in a display of architectural prowess and opulence.
From their lofty vantage point, the Great Halls offer a panoramic view of the bay of Cyren, where the lapping of the waves against the shore echoes in harmony with the bustling city below and towards the Eastern horizon. Here, merchant ships and fishing boats dot the waters, their sails billowing in the sea breeze as they navigate an always active harbor. Within the markets, smaller plazas and districts of permanent havelis swirl in formation. The Grand Plaza stands in the center, as a long open space, lined with marble columns and fountains where water flows freely for all to drink; such is the generosity of those that command the Akesh.
To the West of Cyren, the city’s waterfront unfolds in a triumvirate of districts: the Armade Wharf, Trader’s Wharf and the quaint Fisherman’s Wharf. Here, the latter district hums with activity of those who ply the Gulf of Cyren, their boats laden with the bounty of the sea.
The Fisherman’s Wharf boasts the largest fish market in all Kabourashi; a testament to the abundant harvests that grace Cyren’s shores.
In every corner of Cyren, from its resplendent halls to its busy harbors and swirls of havelis, one will find displays of vibrant opulence and grace.
Tempted to play a Cyrenite? Here are some questions to inspire you:
How do you interact with the diverse communities and districts within Cyren? Do you frequent the Grand Plaza and if so, what draws you to this regal gathering place? Do you have any ties to the bustling fish market? A fish merchant or market trader, perhaps? Could you command the position of a Cyrenite soldier (Wind Fury) - Or do you prefer life on the seas, seeing the whole of Kabourashi and interacting with its many nations? Do you command the wards of a ritual circle, or perhaps enjoy organising the vast number of gatherings, performances and appointments within the Great Halls, aspiring to become a Master of Sand and Stone.

NaBaal
The Family of NaBaal (Spirit/influence): Those of NaBaal possess subtle influence and charisma; adept at navigating social dynamics and shaping perceptions, whilst wielding their influence to inspire change and unity. The NaBaalese find it easy to articulate their ideas and can often sway opinions with finesse and eloquence. They excel in strategic thinking , able to analyse complex situations and devise effective strategies to achieve their goals. Denizens of NaBaal are visionary leaders and are able to inspire others with their ideas, resulting in greater trust, respect and loyalty from others; particularly as they generally uphold high ethical standards.
Nabaalasan is a uniformed and somewhat calmer city of mystery and magic. It used to be a coastal city many years ago, but the coastline had shifted it into the mainland.
There are three looming stone towers in Nabaalasan that enclose the city, connected by a maze of beautifully tended gardens. Nayre, a small settlement or caravansary to the South of Nabaalasan is where people create the lavish purple dyes that are seen flowing throughout the entire city. The cloth is coloured in the tannery dying pits, which is a marvel that people come to see from all around the Akesh lands. There are many rock snail farms here from the predatory murex shellfish that were found originally in (the closest oasis) and this is where the dye is collected from and made.
The city is almost completely surrounded by low hills covered with olive groves. There is plenty of work to be seen in Nabaalasan and those who work there are paid highly. There are many fine markets in Nabaalasan and it smells heavily of incense. Nabaalasan is a very clean and royal place.
There is the Great Archive, surrounded by gardens, which span so wide as to touch all three towers in NaBaal. The Great Archive houses the well known repositories of knowledge, their shelves lined with ancient tomes and scrolls, hiding the mysteries of the unknown, of sorcery, the vast records of Akesh and of course the property deeds of all Akesh. Here, scholars and seekers alike travel far and wide in order to study and reflect.
Where shadows dance with secrets and cling to the cobblestones, resides a clandestine society of traders and fortune tellers - their abodes often concealed from prying eyes and their presence known only to those who seek their counsel in matters of fate and fortune.
Tempted to play a NaBaali? Here are some questions to inspire you:
How do you interact with the three towers and what significance do they hold to you in your daily life? Where do you reside and how do you navigate the busy markets of NaBaalasan?
What role do you play? Perhaps you are a NaBaalese trader, or a fortune teller? A scholar or a ritualist? Are you a Nabaalese warrior (Soul Guardian), sorcerer or entertainer? Perhaps you make the most of the finer ingredients so readily available to you and pursue alchemy or crafting - or perhaps you prefer the safety and stability of farm life.

Vyne
The Family of Vyne (Nature/Freedom): Freedom is not simply the absence of restraint, it is the ability to choose, unencumbered by fear, expectation, or limitation. It is the freedom to think, to speak, and to act. However, freedom is not chaos or reckless abandon; it is to think critically, to consider consequences and to navigate these complexities. True freedom encompasses the liberty to think independently, to speak one’s truth openly, freedom is not an escape from structure but an embrace of the self-determination that allows people to thrive, grow, and contribute to a larger vision and is where Vynerians truly find their freedom.
Those of the Family of Vyne are renowned for their unshakable commitment to freedom and self-expression. To them, life is a canvas to be painted with bold strokes of individuality, where creativity and self-discovery are not just encouraged but celebrated. They view the pursuit of personal freedom as a way of life, one that requires courage, introspection, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. This balance between personal freedom and collective responsibility defines their way of life, as they strive to balance both the freedom of self but also the freedom of the Akesh as a whole.
